Considerations for Early Position Play in Poker
There is no question among Poker experts that being the first to act in any hand presents serious disadvantages for any player. However, there are still ways that you can extract value from your cards when it is your turn to be under the gun.
The first thing that your Poker strategy has to consider is that when you are early, you will be the subject of tells and reads. Given this situation, you should take advantage of the opportunity to send out misinformation. You can misrepresent a hand, or advertise a particular style.
Another thing that you will want to take into account are the blinds. Most of the time, people in the early position will attempt to make a big raise to steal the blinds. This Poker strategy however, entails a lot of risks, because you might be faced with a re raise from the other players. You should only try this if you have a good hand and if the blinds are high enough to warrant the risk.
The amount of success you can attain from playing in early position will depend on the Poker table image that you have. If you are a tight aggressive player, you will have a greater chance of getting your opponents to fold their hand if you make a raise. This is something that will be useful when you decide to play marginal hands.
If you are an aggressive player, then more likely your opponents will call you when you make a raise. If you are holding premium hands under the gun, cultivating a loose aggressive style will be an effective Poker strategy for getting more money in the pot.
Playing under the gun when in Poker tournaments means that you need to be more cautious; always keep in mind the rule that the chips you do not lose are much more valuable than those you stand to win.
Check your chip count. If ou are the short stack, making a raise from the early position will likely elicit a call from the larger stacks. It does not matter if you have a good hand or not, because their aim will be to take you out. If you have a sizeable stack, then you will be able to take more chances playing first.
Playing from under the gun means a lot of more strategy and tactics are required. However, that is the reason why some Poker players are great and some merely good. Those that take the time to profit and plan for every hand, regardless of the location they are in on the table win more games.
