Using Big Poker Hands When in Position

No other position in Poker is more important or coveted than being on the button as it offers the player several benefits over the competition. This is most apparent when you get high hands. Because they provide you with a lot of options, you should consider each one carefully.

With the top two premium hands, namely AA and KK, the usual Poker strategy is to raise big before the flop and take down the pot. This is the approach that you will want to use when you are in a tight aggressive table or in a tourney. However, if it is a loose game, you may want to keep the raise to a minimum so that you will be able to take some loose players with you to the flop.

With KQ, QQ and JJ, you still have strong Poker hands. These may not be as strong if you are in middle position, but being last to act, you will be able to gauge easily if any of the other players on the table have the higher hands. If they check to you, it is obvious that they do not hold them, so you should feel confident of raising. Even if some decide to pay to see the board, you are still in a good spot.

However, if there was a lot of action before you, it is possible that a couple of players obtained Aces or Kings. You will have to decide if you want to take your pocket Queens or Jacks to the flop.

The same Poker strategy of checking what the other players do before you should determine your action for the AK. With AQ however, it is best if you only raise from late position if no one else has. With other hands you can feel comfortable about re raising. However, AQ and AJ as well, are not that strong compared with the other hands.

In a lot of Poker games, AJ and QJ are considered rather weak, and they are in a sense. However, as with other aspects of the game, it is entirely situational; if you are holding one of these hands on the button but everyone folds or limps, then you can feel confident about playing them hard. Of course, if someone before you checks, you raise and then get re raised, fold.
